Small & medium. Round or oblong with moderate ribbing, covered with warts and bumps. Green when immature, orange when mature (warts can remain green, though). It's often used for decorating and carving purposes because of its exceptional look. It has a sturdy handle and sweet yellow flesh (ideal for baking).

Medium to big, round with moderate ribbing. It has a  smooth white rind and orange flesh. Great for carving (looks like a ghost) and decor.

73 - Long Island Cheese Pumpkin

North America staple. Heirloom.
Medium to large, flattened, wide, ribbed. It looks like a wheel of cheese. Color range: light orange, dull orange, mildew orange, pinkish-orange. The flesh is bright orange & ideal for pies.

Long & large, green to dark green with faint light-green streaks. Skin is smooth, sometimes slightly ribbed. It looks like a giant peanut. It can be slightly bent. It can weigh between 20-50 lb. The flesh is bright orange and sweet.

Peru heirloom. Oblong or pear-shaped. It has mildew-green or mildew-blue skin with bumps here and there. It has bright yellow flesh. Ideal for making creamy soups.
Available in the Winter.
Very rare in other parts of the world.

77 - La Estrella Pumpkin

A hybrid. Round, slightly flattened with green (when immature) and dull-orange (when mature) rind covered with whitish streaks and spots that look like constellations. It has yellow flesh and it is mainly grown in Tropics and Subtropics. Very rare.

78 - Lagenaria

Lagenaria is a type of gourd. It contains six species: Lagenaria abyssinica,Lagenaria breviflora, Lagenaria guineensis, Lagenaria rufa, Lagenaria siceraria, Lagenaria sphaerica. They are all tropical fruits and they grow in Africa. The most popular of them Lagenaria siceraria (calabash /bottle gourd) is domesticated and grown outside of Africa.

Sometimes confused with calabash tree fruits. Although they look similar, the calabash gourd grows on climbing vine. When it's fresh it can be consumed as a vegetable (it has light-green skin and white flesh), when it's mature its shell becomes hard and can be used to make bottles and other containers. It comes in a variety of shapes (cylindrical, snake-like, round, bottle-shaped, pear-shaped). Speckled Swan.

Beautiful and quirky gourd. Its shape resembles a swan. It has a wide bottom, slim curved neck (slightly swollen and at the top). Top of the gourd resembles swans head (with is handle often looking like a beak). It has deep-green skin with white speckles.

Long Handled Dipper

They have long necks (sometimes curved or slightly curved) and bulbous bottom. They can be consumed as fruits when young and used to make bottles or ladles when they're mature. They are green colored and become brown when dried. When their necks are curved they look almost identical to swan gourds. You can try and bend young fruits to gave their neck quirky shapes, you can leave it to chance, or grow them on the trellis to achieve straight handle look. They usually grow up to one meter. Powderhorn or Penguin Gourd

Well, they look just like penguins. They're between 9 and 14 inches tall. Green-colored when young, brown when matured and dried. Seeds available on Amazon.

Mayo Bule Gourd

Originally from Mexico. Light-green, pear-shaped. It has smooth skin, but the bottom part of the fruit is covered with light-green warts. Used to make containers.

Kikinda Competition Gourd

Can grow up to 5-7’. Fruits are light green, tender (before they reach 4’). Named in honor of a small village in East Serbia known for its pumpkin festival. It must be grown on a trellis to remain straight. Seeds are available at Rareseeds.

Cucuzza Squash

Up to two feet long. Long, green. Usually, straight, sometimes slightly curved. Resembles snake gourds and sponge gourds.

Lagenaria abyssinica

Small and medium. Oval shaped. Deep-green skin with light-green spots. The flesh is light green. The fruit is used to make containers and instruments. Note: all the fruits from the Lagenaria family can be consumed when young, but are usually used when mature (shells become hard) for making containers and bottles.
