1-Australian Butter Squash

Heirloom. It looks similar to Cinderella Pumpkin, but it's more boxy and rough looking. Its skin is much paler, though. Color range: pink, salmon, yellow, light orange. It's deeply ribbed, usually weighs around 15 pounds. Its rind is hard, but the flesh is sweet and creamy (ideal for baking).
Summer and Winter varieties are available.

2- American Tondo squash

It has pronounced ribs, hard stem, and green & yellow spotty stripes that may become more orange as squash matures. The flesh is yellow, suitable for cooking. It tastes similar to butternut squash.
Available in the Fall and Winter.

3- Acorn squash (Pepper Squash or Des Moines squash)

It's small to medium, acorn-shaped, deeply ribbed. Ripe acorn squash has a dark-green rind. Its flesh is thick, sweet, yellow, or light orange. It's great for stuffing and baking. Available in the Fall & Winter.

4- Atlantic Giant Pumpkin (or Giant Pumpkin, or Cucurbita Maxima)


It can weigh from around 150 pounds to over one ton!
It has ribbed and often crumpled thick skin. Colors vary from light pink to bright orange. It doesn't taste great, but it's still edible. Available in the Fall.

5-Arikara Squash

North American heirloom that gets its name from Arikara tribe (today's North and South Dakota region). It usually weighs between 5 and 10 pounds. Shape range: oval, pear, teardrop, oblong, roundish. Color range: orange, orange & green, dull orange, cream, buff, pinkish. Its skin is rough with moderate ribbing. It may have a limited amount of warts. It has creamy flesh, perfect for making pies. Available in the Winter.

Arikara squash varieties:
Knife River Squash. It's usually dull orange, buff, cream, sometimes green. Usually, pear-shaped or round.
La madera squash. Warty. Oblong, pear-shaped, or roundish. Colors: pink, cream, white, dull orange. Delicious thick flesh.

6-Algonquin Squash

Oblong shaped. Harvested green, turns orange when mature. It has creamy orange flesh. Smooth skin with barely visible ribbing. It can be baked, stuffed, or used for pies. Harvested in the Fall, can keep all Winter if properly stored.

7- Aehobak (or Ae-hobak, or Korean Zucchini)

It looks like an oversized cucumber. It has delicate smooth skin. Color range: light green to yellow-green. It has smooth flesh. Available in the Summer.

8- Autumn Wings Gourds

Usually bottle or pear-shaped. Covered with warts, bulges, and ribs that look like wings. Multi-colored (green, orange, yellow, cream). Often have crooked necks. Available in the Fall.
